What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe tooth pain
Pain that keeps you awake or does not settle.

Often a sign of infection that needs prompt treatment.

What should I do right now?

Knocked-out tooth
Gently rinse the tooth without touching the root and try to place it back in its socket. If that is not possible, store it in milk or saliva and call us straight away.

Pain or swelling
Take painkillers as advised, stick to soft foods and avoid extreme temperatures until you are seen.

Unsure if it is urgent
Call the clinic and describe what has happened. We will advise on the best course of action.
When to call 999
Call 999 or go to A&E if you have facial swelling that affects your breathing, swallowing or vision, bleeding that will not stop, or a facial injury with a possible head injury. Out of hours, call NHS 111 for urgent advice.
